November 12th was the first day of the Vancouver budget city council meeting, with over 600 people registering to speak against significant budget cuts.
Significant cuts to many services have been proposed, yet there is a planned increase in the funding of the Vancouver Police.
Speaking about policing budgets, local poet, writer and organizer Jane Shi spoke said "Cops kill disabled autistic people like me" to which "Vancouver" City Counsellor Brian Montague (currently living in Kelowna, formerly North Vancouver) scoffed, Vancouver City Counsellor Sean Orr commented on Montague's behaviour "Several community leaders have killed themselves. Blatant disregard for people."
November 12th was also the 3rd anniversary of the murder of Dani Cooper by North Vancouver RCMP.
In 2018, Dani wrote an article for the online publication the Volcano, arguing that including police on emergency mental health teams is a harmful practice.
"This bloated funding of police is a trend across Canada, where police are being used to deal with social issues,
including homelessness, the overdose crisis, and now issues of mental health."

BC Legislature Weekly Roundup
This legislative week had more anti trans rhetoric than we have seen in the last several years.
On Monday, October 6th, OneBC MLA Tara Armstrong of Kelowna–Lake Country–Coldstream argues against a motion condemning the Association for Reformed Political Action, a political action group that lobbies for anti-LGBTQ, anti transition, anti abortion, anti divorce laws. Armstrong decries "division" stating "What the member for Burnaby East is doing is trying to divide British Columbians that are perfectly happy coexisting with one another into baskets labelled as good and bad"
BC Conservatives are ordered to flee the legislature to avoid voting on a bill condemning
BC Conservative Leader John Rustad admits in a radio interview that "Some [BC] Conservative MLAs don't believe in democracy"
MLA Tara Armstrong, who 49 hours prior called for "happy coexistence" introduced the "Protecting Minors from Gender Transition Act", an anti trans bill that would strip trans people under the age of 19 from access to any transition treatments, allow parents to sue doctors for 25 years after their child has transitioned, etc - if passed, this bill would have been wildly unconstitutional, so they wrote it to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause.
The "Protecting Minors from Gender Transition Act" failed vote for first reading 48-40.
Both "OneBC" MLAs, Independent MLA Jordan Kealy (Peace River North) and all BC Conservatives present voted for the bill. The following BC Conservatives were not in the chamber for the vote.
MLA Amelia Boultbee (Penticton-Summerland)
MLA Brent Chapman (Surrey South)
MLA Á'a:líya Warbus (Chilliwack-Cultus Lake)
Attorney General Niki Sharma responded to OneBC's statements in the legislature, calling them "conspiracy theories" and apologizes for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in BC who see this kind of hatred in the legislature.

Edhi Alice: Take at the Vancouver International Film Festival
Kim Ilrhan’s documentary takes an unconventional form, as befits a work about two brave souls defying convention. The first section focuses on Alice, a trans woman who works as a lighting director on films (including, in a self-reflexive twist, this one). Alice is a dedicated craftswoman, and she pushes her tenacity further in pursuit of her real dream: to become a dancer. Eventually, the focus switches to Edhi, a counsellor who is preparing for gender-affirming surgery. Facing down skepticism from others as well as internal trepidation, Edhi undergoes the procedure, and Kim documents her post-operation life in which she feels, as she puts it, “lighter”.
Besides its gentleness and obvious affection for its two subjects, what gives Edhi Alice: Take its distinction is Kim’s attention to detail, both physical and psychological. From the specifics of post-op dilation to the pain of repression, she explores trans identity with curiosity and deep respect. Her subjects repay that respect, disclosing their thoughts and feelings with commendable honesty.

Night Stage dir Filipe Matzembacher, Marcio Reolon (Brazil) | Canadian Premiere | Altered States
Matias (Gabriel Faryas) is a queer Black actor on the rise. When he enters into an intensely physical relationship with Rafael (Cirillo Luna) — a wealthy, white mayoral candidate — the pair discover a mutual fetish for public sex, putting their professional lives into jeopardy. Directors Marcio Reolon and Felipe Matzembacher construct a steamy, slow-burn erotic thriller that presents queer love as a dangerous act of defiance, bursting out from the nightclubs and into the neon soaked streets of Porto Alegre.

Thanks to the Hard Work of the Elephants dir Bryce Hodgson (Canada) - World Premiere
High on LSD and eager to break from confinement, two teenage boys steal a van and make their escape from the youth treatment centre that has kept them under lock and key. Four-hundred kilometres later, broken down in the parking lot of a Valu-Mart and wracked with PTSD, the next stage of their trip begins. Bryce Hodgson's film attacks the multi-billion-dollar "troubled teen" industry, which preys helpless parents and vulnerable, queer youth. An emotionally potent rendering of young minds lost to trauma.

3670 dir Joonho Park (South Korea) ) | Canadian Premiere | Portraits
From Park Joon-ho comes a fascinating, deeply poignant coming-of-age story. An escapee from North Korea, Cheol-jun (Cho You-hyun) is having trouble adjusting to life in Seoul. Shy, socially awkward, and deep in the closet, Cheol-jun is advised to join a social group for young gay men, but the subculture of open homosexuality is defined by customs he struggles to understand. Park’s film walks a fine line: the writer-director is humane enough to avoid cynicism and honest enough to reject false uplift.

Stop Bill C-2
Bill C-2, Mark Carney’s so-called “Strong Borders” Act, is cruel, useless and dangerous. Experts are calling it the most anti-privacy legislation since Harper’s C-51, and comparable to - and in some ways, even worse than - the Trump administration's anti-migrant and refugee measures. The Government and the bill’s supporters say we need strong borders to protect our safety; but the truth is that C-2’s flagrant attacks on our rights are so broad, it will make all of us less safe. Yet unless we mobilize in force now, Bill C-2 will likely pass into law this fall.
This webinar will cover the essentials you need to know to understand what’s wrong with Bill C-2, and the “elbows down” political context that’s driving Carney’s proposal.
You’ll be able to:
*ask privacy and migrant rights experts your questions about the details of the bill;
*leave with a full toolset to make your voice heard and help stop this harmful and dangerous legislation.
Speakers will include some of Canada’s leading civil society voices on humanitarian issues and your rights:
*Adam Sadinsky, Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers
*Kate Roberston, Citizen Lab
*Sarom Rho, Migrant Rights Network
*Matt Hatfield, OpenMedia
